Serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 2
Serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 2 (SRSF2) is an RNA-binding protein essential for pre-mRNA splicing. It functions as a bridge between 5′- and 3′-splice site recognition components during spliceosome assembly, interacts with snRNPs and other splicing factors via its RS domains, and binds purine-rich RNA sequences to commit transcripts to splicing. The protein also participates in cisplatin-induced apoptosis when phosphorylated (UniProt: Q01130).
SRSF2 operates within the spliceosomal pathway and is broadly involved in mRNA processing across cell types. No baseline disease associations are listed in the UniProt record.
SRSF2 is upregulated in Alzheimer's disease brain tissue. Proteomics analysis of human post-mortem AD brain compared to age-matched controls detected SRSF2 across subcellular fractions with a mean log2 fold-change of +0.67 (Chaparral AD proteomics), indicating increased abundance. This elevation may reflect altered splicing activity or compensatory mechanisms in neurodegeneration.
